About this website

This is my personal site—my home base on the web, and a place of congregation. Visitors are welcome 24/7, and free to stay as long as they'd like.

I bought this domain as a teenager, when I was convinced I'd soon achieve mononymous fame. I use my full name now, but improving this site through the years has been a nice way to take care of my childhood self.

Today's version of the site, as specified below, should represent me (Asher) publicly, but also be an enjoyable space to return to at times. I'm currently reading [[How to Do Nothing]] by Jenny Odell, in which she argues that we are living in an attention economy, propagated by large unknowable corporations, all vying for our time and brainpower. I want none of this. If you like being here, be here. If you don't, sorry—I hope we can still be friends.

Goals

• Simple: The [[machinations]] of this site should be kept to their bare functional minimum.

  This means no unnecessary programmatic optimizations. Copy+paste is more powerful than we give it credit for.

• Narcissism: It's my site. If I'm not having fun, something is wrong.

• Local: I have no aspirations towards scalability. The site should cater to its visitors and no one else.

  If you enjoy it, it's for you. If you don't, it's not.

• Imperfection: Just doing the thing I guess. It doesn't need to be the perfect version. That's the beauty of a website! I can change it whenever. And I will :)

Machinations

The site is powered by Eleventy: it's a lightweight, powerful JavaScript static-site-generator, and the only SSG I've bothered sinking time into. It ain't broke...

I'm publishing through Obsidian. I've grappled with way too many content management systems; they make my head hurt. Obsidian is technically(?) for note-taking, but since this whole site runs out of a git repo, I can edit my markdown there, and have it auto-push to publish.

Disclaimer; or, On Gifs

Gifs are like tattoos. One should be cautious about which they show, since they're so visible. Each should hold a special significance to its page (or user), and be respectful of everyone and everything that may encounter it. JUST KIDDING THEYRE SICK AS HELLLLL & I like how they look <3

Gifs gave life to a once-vibrant internet, which now lives in stasis and silence. hav some fun.
